Sitting Pretty at the “Men’s Spa:” Dr. Mistry Talks with Pride Family Medicine About Men’s Aesthetic Services
Speaker 1:
Welcome back to the Armor Men’s Health Hour with Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee.
Dr. Mistry:
Hello, and welcome back to the Armor Men’s Health Hour. I am Dr. Mistry, your host, here with my cohost, office manager, partner in crime here.
Donna Lee:
That’s right. That’s me.
Dr. Mistry:
Donna Lee.
Donna Lee:
I’m like Robin to Batman or Supergirl to Superwoman.
Dr. Mistry:
No.
Donna Lee:
No?
Dr. Mistry:
No. You’re more like Alfred.
Donna Lee:
Alfred? Wow.
Dr. Mistry:
I’m going to pay for that one later.
Donna Lee:
Yes, you are.
Dr. Mistry:
I’m going to pay for that one later.
Donna Lee:
I quit!
Dr. Mistry:
I quit. You got nowhere to go, lady.
Donna Lee:
I don’t. I just go home.
Dr. Mistry:
Oh my goodness. This is the Armor Men’s Health Hour. I am a board certified urologist. We have a show that is topical for men’s health issues. We love our partners here at KLBJ news radio, love being able to deliver this show. And you know, they let us have a repeat show on Sunday, sometimes.
Donna Lee:
Sometimes. Right now they do. They’re really nice about that.
Dr. Mistry:
That’s nice. We love it.
Donna Lee:
And then people on Sundays listening get confused, because we sometimes say it’s Saturday.
Dr. Mistry:
We won’t say any days anymore, because I think that a lot of people listen on the podcast.
Donna Lee:
That’s true, all over the world. This will be an award winning men’s wellness podcast.
Dr. Mistry:
If you are out there and you know how to promote a podcast, please let us know. We’re not very good at it. Now we do love it when people say the hear us on the radio, though.
Donna Lee:
Well, we have a ton of podcast downloads, so where’s that happening? I don’t know if that’s my mom.
Dr. Mistry:
That’s right. That’s right. We love it. We love it. We love our listener engagement. Love you sending us questions to…
Donna Lee:
Armormenshealth@gmail.com!
Dr. Mistry:
Uh, yes. The song really helps. Regardless of whether you think your topic or your question is specifically related to urology or not, if you have a men’s health question, send it to us. I have so many specialists partners out there in the community, people that I trust people that I’ve seen operate, people I’ve operated with, people who I’ve operated on…
Donna Lee:
That’s true. HIPPA!
Dr. Mistry:
HIPPA! I really, I really love it when doctors come to me for their vasectomy.
Donna Lee:
I bet, because they bring you their ding-a-lings to work on.
Dr. Mistry:
Well…
Donna Lee:
Snip snip.
Dr. Mistry:
It’s their yum yums and their ding-a-lings at the same time. We are here with one of our wonderful family medicine partners, Pride Family Medicine. Welcome guys.
Donna Lee:
Welcome.
Dr. Mistry:
Okay. So I have Raissa Behm and Ashley Whatley and they’re both nurse practitioners at Pride Family Medicine. And you know what I want to talk about? Making me look prettier.
:
We can make you look pretty.
Donna Lee:
We need the men to be a little prettier.
Dr. Mistry:
You know, my wife is the most beautiful woman on the face of the earth.
Donna Lee:
She really is, you’re a lucky man.
Dr. Mistry:
And she, you know, will hint every so often that she’d like to get, you know, maybe a little something, you know…
Donna Lee:
A little something something.
Dr. Mistry:
…maybe a little hair color, maybe…
Donna Lee:
Hair color? That’s so 1984. We need some fillers and botox…
Dr. Mistry:
Maybe some cosmetics. I can’t even say those things on the air. She doesn’t listen to the show. So that’s good. She’s going to get kinda upset at me. And so men want that stuff too, right guys?
Speaker 2:
Yes, absolutely. I mean, honestly, Botox for men is really big. We do Botox and fillers for, for everyone. And I think a lot of guys don’t want to go because there’s a stigma, “Oh, there’s Botox. That’s only for women.” Not true. It’s for men as well.
Donna Lee:
My husband wants it because he has those really deep lines in his forehead and it makes him look very upset all the time. He said, he’s looking very concerned.
:
Right? Who wants to look angry all the time, right?
Dr. Mistry:
I’m sending him right now. Well, that’s really interesting. And you, you know, just as how people go to an aesthetic service, a lot of times they’re designed for women. So this idea of going to a med spa, if you’re a man and you walk in and there’s lavender candles and frilly pictures, and it just, it just seems very, very odd to walk into an environment like that if you’re a man for your treatments.
Donna Lee:
Instead of a med spa, you can call it a “men’s spa.”
:
Men spa.
Dr. Mistry:
A men’s spa? I think you get a completely different kind of experience. So a lot of times, you know, aesthetics are included inside some primary care offices. Some do it well, some do it poorly. I think you guys do a really good job.
Speaker 2:
Thank you. Thank you. We like what we do. We have two estheticians that work with us full time, and they’re all very experienced with all the aesthetic procedures. We have laser hair removal available, tattoo removal available. Hair removal seems to be very popular with guys. They want smooth backs.
Dr. Mistry:
I will tell you that…
Donna Lee:
And underneath, underlings.
Dr. Mistry:
I’ve got to tell you a story though. Okay. And that is that about 12 years ago, when I first became a practicing physician here in Austin, I decided to get some laser hair removal myself on my face, and it hurt like the Dickens, even though they try to numb it up. Has anything evolved in that space?
Donna Lee:
In 12 years, has something changed?
Dr. Mistry:
Is anything better?
:
12 years is a long time! Yeah. So there’s a lot of new generation lasers out there. When we have the erbium laser that is really one of the most recent generations of lasers out there. It hurts less. We still do the numbing because we think that’s part of the spa package.
Donna Lee:
Right? Is it like a little rubber band pop?
:
It does. It feels like a little rubber band, like popping on your…
Donna Lee:
So it won’t make you cry like Dr. Mistry cried 12 years ago, is what you’re saying?
Dr. Mistry:
Please.
:
Probably not.
Dr. Mistry:
I think I could handle the back stuff pretty good.
:
Really? That sounds really…
Dr. Mistry:
People want smooth hairless backs?
Donna Lee:
Yeah. My husband wants a smooth hairless back.
Dr. Mistry:
Does he?
Donna Lee:
He gets it waxed.
Dr. Mistry:
Why is it that in my mind he gets it waxed, you could admit that on the radio?
Donna Lee:
Sorry, Michael.
Dr. Mistry:
Oh my Lord. Oh my God. He’s going to be so upset at us. He needs botox, he needs filler for his forehead.
Donna Lee:
You talk about his small ding-a-ling. I just mentioned his smooth back.
Dr. Mistry:
Oh my goodness. How long does it take to get a smooth back? And how many treatments do you think someone like me of, you know, my descent would need?
Donna Lee:
Of your descent? Extra.
:
So most people, it depends on your skin as well, but most people get about six treatments to get full hair removal. Sometimes, you know, over years it’ll come back. And so you might need a repeat treatment after several years. But for the most part, it goes away because we’re basically targeting those hair follicles.
Dr. Mistry:
How much would people expect to pay for like a back laser hair removal?
:
So each, each body part we treat kind of differently just because it requires different time and different types of lasers and techniques to actually get the treatment you want. So we recommend a consultation with our aestheticians to see what’s proper for you. And so those are really, the consultations are free. So if there’s any question on what part you want to get done, there’s a lot of different parts that we can get done.
Donna Lee:
I bet I know at one of those parts are.
:
Yeah, a consultation would be the best thing to do. And…
Dr. Mistry:
You’re talking about the belly?
Donna Lee:
Mhmm. Underneath the belly.
:
Below.
Donna Lee:
Below the belly.
:
No, no. Nobody lasers down there.
Donna Lee:
Oh yes they do.
Dr. Mistry:
Oh my Lord.
Donna Lee:
Did your ding-a-ling tighten up just now?
:
It did. Just the idea of the pain in that area.
:
It’s all about the bikini line.
Dr. Mistry:
But we’re not here to judge, you understand?
Donna Lee:
That’s right.
Dr. Mistry:
I think it would look really funny if I had like a hairless bikini line, but this, a lot of hair on my back.
Donna Lee:
Yeah. They can fix both at Pride Family Medicine and Aesthetics.
:
Yes we can.
Dr. Mistry:
I think that for men to understand that, you know, there are some men who naturally are very attentive to their looks. But there’s some other men who may be bothered by a particular thing that they’d like to get better, whether it be a tattoo they’d like to have removed, or they would like to have, you know, as you’ve mentioned less hair on their back or on their face, then what the benefit of going to their primary care doctor and you guys at Pride Family Medicine, is that we can make sure they’re also kind of healthy and topped up on their health issues as well as come into an environment they’re going to feel really comfortable.
Speaker 2:
Right. Right. And that’s, our goal is, you know as their primary care, we know them, we know our patients and, you know, we can recommend the best treatments for them just because, you know, we don’t want to send somebody with massive heart issues getting laser treatments–no, that’s not cool.
Donna Lee:
I didn’t even think about for that.
:
Yeah, or diabetic patients who don’t have, you know, good healing. We don’t want to destroy skin or, you know, get those treatments done if they’re not controlled. So we pay attention to, to health. We want to make sure people are in their best health and that way we can get them healthy and pretty.
Donna Lee:
That’s right. And an aesthetic spa that wasn’t run by a family medicine group wouldn’t know all of that.
Dr. Mistry:
And it really gets to that point that I make over and over on the show, which is that if you’re going to a medical that only provides one thing, you know, only does one thing, then you’re going to get that thing every time. You know, if you have erectile dysfunction and you go somewhere that only does penile shockwave therapy, guess what? You’re going to get penile shockwave therapy, whether it’s right for you or not going to work for you.
Donna Lee:
…That’s right. Even if it doesn’t work.
Dr. Mistry:
…because that’s what they’re selling there. And so, when it comes to aesthetics, if you have people that can do a broad range of things, you’re going to get the right thing for you at that particular time with your health situation, as opposed to a Botox party where you’re probably going to get Botox.
Donna Lee:
Even if you needed filler, you’re getting Botox.
Dr. Mistry:
That’s right. That’s right. If you’re going to a filler party, you’re getting fillers. If you broaden your opinion of your medical provider, you will probably get broader level care.
Donna Lee:
That’s right. And y’all are located where?
